Pick A Scene, Any Scene

My current state of research here in Chicago is focused on compiling as much released material as possible on specific music scenes. To this end I am now focused on getting as many bands, albums, and representative line-ups that were a part of any one music scene. I have to get a ton of these scenes (around 20-15) fully represented in the database, which is going to be tough but I'd like to open the scene selections to what you guys would also like to see vetted out.

For example, I've gotten an acceptable precentage of bands / albums for:

1) 80's NY Hardcore (85-90)
2) Early LA Punk (77-82)
3) Early Seattle Grunge (85-90) - this could use some 90's work though
4) I tried the FL Death Metal world but it got so large and diffuse I started losing it.

Right now I have a research assistant June (jkf91) working on the Paisley Underground scene (LA rock 83-88), and after that am going to move onto the Austin, TX indy rock scene revolving around the Trace Syndicate label. Paperxwalls has metioned working on the currect LA hardcore scene, Scott has put in a ton of the Nor-Cal punk/indy world, etc. If there is one scene that you'd like to see fully represented in the system, let me know (by what the scene is and what bands comprise it) and I'll start turning my attentions to gather, verify, and make like live those threads of research. All scenes are welcome, and the more diverse the better. Thanks.

I'm also going to work on the DC/Maryland area hardcore/screamo family, from the late 90's until now. There's more bands that connect to Darkest Hour and Majority Rule and my friend who's originally from Baltimore and knows a lot about that scene is going to help me out with it to get the bands not on the site in.
My local scene, but ...

Reading (UK) ...

... the problem is that (a) nobody much is particularly interested in full website documentation (apart from those wonderful Static Rain boys) (b) apart from Arena and Pressgang I haven't been able to find any connection to the Outside World (so most of the stuff is languishing in my sandbox), (c) I'm discovering how shamefully little I know about it, and (d) due to "changes in life commitments", I'm not having the time to work on it much at the moment.

Most of the bands round here are unsigned anyway.

Though it is is fairly well documented already on the site, the Chicago scene of the 90s with all of the Kinsella bands, Hum , Braid, etc related bands, etc needs some work I think.

I actually just added a band from that scene called Days In December but any help with finding their complete lineup would be greatly apreciated.

The past 10 years of New Jersey Emo/Punk scene is something I am also very interested in working on - as there are tons of bands from that scene that are not on this site (Penfold, LWL, Shades Apart, With Resistance, etc)

I've already added in Fairweather and Nitro Tokyo (a member of Darkest Hour) since FW connects to NT. If anyone wants to take a look at those (Fairweather has already been verified) and help out, that'd be excellent.

I'm working on adding a couple more bands to that tree as well, such as Olympia (featuring Shane Johnson, drummer of Fairweather and Nitro Tokyo, and ex-members of the now defunct Richmond, VA rock band Brand New Disaster, who will go in with the Olympia connection). Also, apparently Pat Broderick who was in Majority Rule (and is on all the MR releases already in the dB) played on the first Fairweather record according to my friend from Baltimore, but I need to find the lineup for that and check it before I add it in to the queue. But again, if anyone wants to help with this, that'd be terrific.

The East Bay / Nocal stuff could always use more work.

I'm currently adding as much underground hip hop stuff as i can. That would probably be cool for your research because it is a completely different scene than anything else we currently have in here, with very little overlap.

Here is what is in now:

Subtle
Alias
Deep Puddle Dynamics

These are in the queue:

13 & God
Atmosphere
Eyedea & Abilities
Felt
I Self Divine
Jel
Micranots
Oliver Hart
Semi.Official
Slug
Sole
The Dynospectrum
Them
Themselves

I plan on getting these in tonight:

cLOUDDEAD
Odd Nosdam

Excellent, I'm definitely going to try and hit these various scenes one by one. Here's what I've got for suggestions / research threads:

Scott: Underground hip-hop
Alex: 90's Chicago (Kinsella tree); recent NJ punk/emo
Paper: late 90's screamo
Matt: Reading (?), is there something more solid like the Canterbury world?

Sadly, no ...

... there's Outhouse Studios ((Arena) John Mitchell's establishment) where a lot of the recordings are made, and there's a fairly healthy live scene, but there's nothing Really Big.

I'll keep it on the backburner - but unfortunately time is not as free as it used to be either.

I'll carry on with stuff that links in from the Canterbury Scene a bit more, plug a few gaps if you like, that should be straightforward ...

Actually, I was making occasional forays into the mid-80s indie/college rock scene, including the Paisley Underground, the Hoboken scene, etc.

I'm also working on the current Long Island, NY emo/indie rock scene. The Backup Plan (on the site already) connects directly to recent Revelation Records' signees Gracer who connect to a bunch of other bands, including Lux Courageous, Small Arms Dealer, and On The Might Of Princes. I added in all their releases into the queue and it would be great if we can get them all in eventually.

In addition, I've added two more bands from the late-90's Chicago hardcore scene to add in to the tree, specifically Vegan Reich and Racetraitor.

Nice to see two totally different scenes coming out into another totally different scene:
Anticon (13 & God) < Weilheim (Notwist) > Kiwi (Graeme Jefferies)

To add on to the San Fran/East Bay punk scene, Retching Red (featuring former Tilt vocalist Cinder Block) and their most recent album have been sitting in the queue for a while. As with the Horrorpops, a pyschobilly band featuring a former member of Tiger Army and AFI, their most recent release I added in a while ago too and it needs to be looked at.

Added a bunch more stuff in the queue to lengthen the Long Island indie & hardcore scenes that stems from The Backup Plan, Gracer and On The Rise (all already in the dB). Specifically bands such as Take My Chances, Satellite Lost (members of Gracer and Lux Courageous), The Cotton Weary, Heads Vs. Breakers, Silent Majority, Inside, Blood Red, Capital and Dearly Departed - all in the queue waiting to be checked and verified. Also, not exactly in that tree but also Long Island - Celebrity Murders is in the queue waiting to be verified. I'm having some trouble pinpointing the exact lineup. All I know is it features Artie Phillie of Milhouse/Indecision fame and Brian Meehan of Milhouse and Kill Your Idols.

I just came across a bunch of stuff to add into the Chicago hardcore & pop punk scenes and also some other hardcore stuff from that general region:

Andy Hurley (drummer of Fall Out Boy, Racetraitor, Vegan Reich) was in two other bands, The Kill Pill (with Mani of Racetraitor) and Project Rocket. The Kill Pill connects to Since By Man, and Project Rocket connects to the Chicago pop punk bands Spitalfield and Knockout, as well as Detroit metalcore stalwarts 7 Angels 7 Plagues and Misery Signals. Misery Signals also connect to the Canadian metalcore band Compromise (I'm still searching for a release by them). Knockout also connects to the Plain White T's, and 7a7p also connect to Dead To Fall.

Kevin, since you seem to know people from around the Chicago scenes, I'm guessing you'll be helping me out with this.

edit: I've gotten them all in the queue except Compromise.

I realize not many people are working on this because of the assignments that Kevin has given us, but I also am working on the Tooth & Nail Records/Christian pop punk scene of the mid-90's. Using Ninety Pound Wuss (already in the dB) I'm getting in other bands such as The Cootees, Slick Shoes and MxPx. If anyone wants to take a look and verify those, that'd be great.
