Can I just check - do we still only use this for non-contemporaneous releases; ie if an album is recorded and released in the 'normal' time frame for such things to happen - we don't aspire to record the dates of recording sessions?

I think that was the original intention, and still the most useful instance, but personally I tend to include the rec. date whenever it's available. I don't see it as essential, but if we know it why not use it?

You're right - no reason - other than it's a sometimes difficult bit of research and (unless the month is known) can lead to inaccuracies and there are other bits of info we don't capture that would be more useful (eg instruments played would help with disambiguation).

I've adopted the pin_punk approach. If I'm adding an album anew or I happen to be updating one and I find the recording date in doing so, then I include it. If someone asks me to add one to an existing entry, I will. But, given the impossibility of the quest, I don't advocate us adding recording dates to ALL of the entries already in the database.
