An example being Thijs van Leer (who needs to be amended to be as such in the DB, I'll post this up in shambles in a minute).

He has released several solo works under the name "Thijs van Leer" and "Tys van Leer".

Now, although his name has a non-capitalised "van", does this mean that the "band name" also has a non-capitalised "van" as well? This is confused by the fact that the band name itself appears on the first solo album in all caps "THIJS VAN LEER".

I don't see anything inherently troublesome about applying the band name rules in the band name context and the artist name rules in the artist name context. We'll have different results, but that's part of the fun.

I agree. It's roughly comparable to the diacritic situation we have with:

Günter Hampel (artist name) in
Gunter Hampel & His Galaxie Dream Band (band name)

or:

Dennis González (artist name) in
Dennis Gonzalez New Dallas Sextet (band name)

Is there a rule I missed disallowing accents and other markings in band names? Seems like in those examples you gave the bands should be renamed :(

(As to the original question, I agree with Mark.)

The diacritics in the band names I gave aren't "disallowed" -- they simply aren't represented on the albums. Compare, e.g., "Dennis González Dallas-London Sextet" vs. "Dennis Gonzalez New Dallas Sextet", or "Samo Šalamon Quartet" vs. "Samo Salamon New Quartet". We now regularize artist names with appropriate diacritics (Dennis González, Samo Šalamon), but we only do the same for band names if the diacritics are actually used.

Sort of like the The rule. Craziness. OK.
