If John Doe has never released any solo work but is on another artist's album which is credited as "Bill Smith with John Doe" - has Doe lost his 'never had any solo' status (and therefore the ability to form a connected collaboration at a later date)?

I swear I came across this issue within the last couple weeks, but can't remember what it was.
I say, no, John Doe doesn't lose his status until there is a release of his own where he is credited as John Doe.

Was it Cerys Matthews from Catatonia? This situation applies to her, I believe.

Scott's approach should be the right one. Under the old collaboration / connectivity rules John Doe would have lost solo status, but the current rules would not recognize John Doe as a solo artist because "XYZ And John Doe" is not equal to John Doe.
