[x] Capitalisation of album titles

What is our rule on this? Is it similar to the band rules (although that would mean many more odd capitalisations since album titles are one-offs and can't fail a consistency test) or is it First Letter Caps only?

I don't think we've discussed titles in a long time, but as far as I know, we've capitalized the first letter (and no others) of every word in the title in every entry in the database except for one or two:

I think we should discuss & agree because, in the absence of a rule, everyone's making their own rules:

It seems to me that we would use the same rules as we do for band names.

For misterp's example, HeartattaCk was a long running zine, that always used that capitalization scheme. I think we are safe with that one. (The "HC" is for "hardcore.")

I seem to remember AC/DC's "Fly On The Wall" album being used in an argument about why we shouldn't allow for "strange" lettering/symbology/capitalization in album titles -- with the argument being that if we put in an album the way the cover art showed it, precedent would demand we handle that particular album specially too.

I'm not sure whether I agree with the argument, but I feel much less comfortable allowing for arbitrary capitalization of album titles based on cover art etc., because there isn't so much evidence as there usually is in the case of a band.

If I had to vote I'd probably say all albums should be titled with First Letter Caps.

(Edit: should -> shouldn't)

I don't really care (other than ensuring we're consistent). I do veer towards 'First Letter Caps' or better still that we adopt 'Chaicago Manual of Style'. This is only because sleeves (which remain our primary source of data) tend to be highly stylised and trivial capitalisation or representation schemes will become rampant; as will discussion about whether to take sleeve, spine or label. With the very high bar we set for band names, these discussions are few and far between.

Capital Punishment 5 now addresses this issue. With band names and artist names, we can observe a consistent and intentional use of an alternative capitalization scheme over a course of albums. To take the same approach with album titles, we'd have to inspect different parts (cover, spine, back, labels) of each release, which could be pure madness.

It's unfortunate that HeartattaCk and fsck had to fall victim to this rule. Oh well.
