Do diacritics confuse the disambig warning when adding albums? I added Alex Acuña without any warning that he might be Alejandro Acuña||.

I don't think so, but it could just be that Alex and Alejandro don't seem very similar from the perspective of the matching program.

I thought it would warn me if I use any pre-existing alias as a primary name - is that not what it normally does?

That sounds right. Maybe the special characters do throw things off then.
