If "& friends" is not allowed, then why are "& family"
and "& daughters"
allowed?

I don't see any difference between these three band name extensions. In all three cases the extension is a formal description of the additional musicians and not a band name.

Personally, I don't want to erase Van Leer's offspring from our database, I'd rather see "& friends" accepted so we can have Eddie and Brian May in the same band again.

I agree it's arbitrary but at least 'Family' has some way of being bounded and so I'd accept 'Family', 'Band' or anything else. I quite like excluding 'friends' - I find it hard to encapsulate why but it seems to reflect their lower status by not treating them as members.

Right on. Kevin and I talked about this tonight. We see "Family" or "Daughters" as representing a bounded group of of members whose relationship to the main artist is more permanent and clearly defined than the generic "Friends" category.

As an alternative, I proposed eliminating 2d and applying our usual membership analysis, but we couldn't agree on that.
