For releases credited to "Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan" we're using "Rufus" as the primary name:

For releases with "Rufus [connector] Chaka Khan," I've made the primary band name "Rufus/Chaka Khan":
[bandtoband.com]

That's based on the crediting of "Streetplayer," the first release I can find that precedes "Chaka Khan" with a connector rather than "Featuring." The band name appears as "Rufus/Chaka Khan" on the spine and also on the label of a single from the album ("Stay") -- see evidence here:
[bandtoband.com]

This is based on our policy of styling the connector based on the band's first release.

Let me know if this all makes sense.

So I take it that Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi was treated differently as it's a case where the named band member was the one insisting it was a different entity to the band and his name had to be in there. Just checking. :)

Some discussion of the Iommi exception in this 2013 thread:

One might argue that "Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan" was similarly "consistent and pervasive" for a time (1974-77), without any complicating legal issues. Perhaps Mark can chime in with thoughts on these long-ago rulings.

Those early rulings were not as open as we later became to using "Featuring" as a band name or collaboration connector.

I think the Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi name is right based on context, but it's funny that there's also a differently treated variant recorded during the same period: [bandtoband.com]

I think it makes sense to take a closer look in case "Featuring" was acting like a connector earlier on in the band's career, as with [bandtoband.com]

In this case we have "Rufus" to start (s/t 1973), followed by "Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan" on four albums from 1974 to 1977, then "Rufus/Chaka Khan" in 1978, and then back to "Rufus" without Chaka Khan, except for the albums where she comes back and they're "Rufus With Chaka Khan" or "Rufus And Chaka Khan"!

I think lumping in "Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan" with the ones that have connectors (a la Nick Cave) makes as much sense as any.
Mark
I took one more look at everything and went for it.
