There is a lot of conflicting evidence as to whether it was Pete Quaife or John Dalton who was bassist for The Kinks between May 1966 (when Dalton depped for Quaife for 3 months when he'd broken his ankle) and March 1969 when he joined permanently.

The "official" story is that Dalton may have played bass on part of Face To Face (released Nov 66), but Quaife played on all other releases up till Village Green (released Nov 68).

However, there are two conflicting stories about:
[kinks.it.rit.edu]

"JPM: Due to your car crash in june 1966, you were unable to perform with the Kinks for some time, but had the sessions for the album Face To Face been done already with you on bass, because some reports mention that your temporary replacement John Dalton only recorded "Little Miss Queen Of Darkness" from that album ?

PQ: Yes, I had finished that album. Completely. So, no, it wasn't Chubby [Dalton] playing that number."

On the other hand, we have Pete Frame:
"John Dalton, originally called in to dep for Pete Quaife, who had broken his ankle, seems to have played a greater part than imagined. Quaife returned briefly but left again in May 66, according to Dalton, who claims to have been a permanent Kink since "Dead End Street" and "Face To Face" - even though Quaife's name and photos appaer on single and album sleeves until early 1969."

So - who's right, or are they *both* lying? I admit I'd been pretty sure Dalton was on all Kinks albums from 1966 on, but since various people have pointed out that this may not be correct, I've started to doubt my beliefs.
