A few people have emailed us to argue that Duane Allman was a member of Derek And The Dominos because of Allman's role on the band's debut studio album.

Our take on this is that he was not. Here's why:

This site ( [www.chromeoxide.com] ) has a comprehensive breakdown of the band's performances and recording sessions. Derek And The Dominos formed in May 1970 and began performing and recording together in England soon after. In August 1970, the band flew to the U.S. to record the Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs album. After the first day of recording (August 26), Clapton and Allman met, at which point Clapton invited Allman to participate in the recording sessions:

Allman began recording with them on the third day of the sessions (August 28). Many, many sites talk about his involvement in the recording session and how he helped shape many of the songs. Over the course of about two weeks, he played on 12 of the 14 songs recorded for the album. Note that the first site listed directly below this paragraph is a very detailed Clapton fan site that lists Allman as a guest (scroll down until you find him) as does the third:

Then the band went back to England without Allman. At some point, Clapton inivited Allman to join the band, but Allman rejected the offer. The band toured the U.K. in September-October 1970 and then toured the U.S. in October-December 1970. Near the end of the U.S. tour, Allman joined the band on stage as a guest member for the December 1 show and possibly the next night as well:

The Clapton tourography puts all of the band's tour dates in a listing that is a bit easier to read, although it doesn't say anything about Allman:

The band entered the studio again in April and May of 1971 to record a second album (without Allman of course), but broke up in the process:

In summary, the band got together in May 1970 without Allman and flew to the United States to record, where Clapton and Allman met. Allman came into the studio to record with the band, starting with the third day of recording, but did not go back to the U.K. with the band. Allman turned down Clapton's invitation to join the band, but did show up as a guest at two U.S. shows.
